Paying for Medical Care

It is not unusual for the highest-quality healthcare for our pets to be unaffordable to most of us. For example, an MRI might be the only possible way to diagnose a pet's tumor, but the cost of a single MRI is usually over $1,500.00 or more. A Golden Retriever that Dr. Shurtleff referred to Tufts in February of 2018 needed four of them before his brain abscess was successfully cured! If it is any consolation, just twenty years ago we would have been unable to even diagnose that condition, let alone cure it. And this predicament is not unique to Veterinary medicine; many human patients face similar circumstances when making decisions about their own healthcare.

We strive to help all patients by keeping our charges as low as possible. While we can and do practice the highest quality of medicine, we also offer lower-cost alternatives when possible. There is no Medicare or Mass Health to help us with our pet's medical expenses. However, there are a few non-profit organizations which receive donations from the public and grants from large foundations to subsidize the costs of healthcare for indigent pets, including Dakin Animal Shelter and Second Chance Community Veterinary Hospital, both located in Springfield. Some clients have also had success in raising money by setting up “Go Fund Me” accounts on that organization's website.

Strays and Wildlife

We work extensively with several Western Massachusetts non-profits that provide adoption services, medical care, and spaying and neutering for dogs and cats, as well as wildlife rescue.
